ASPECTS OF DIELECTRIC CONSTANT AND LOSS MEASUREMENTS AT 100 MHZ,
Abstract
Despite errors introduced into 100-MHz capacitance measurements by series inductances associated with the dielectric sample holder, a modified Hartshorn-Ward micrometer method currently employed for solid samples circumvents these difficulties and yields proper results for dielectric constant and loss tangent. For cases where the modified Hartshorn-Ward method cannot be used (e.g. with liquid samples), equations are derived to correct the dielectric constant and loss measurements, using a double L-section equivalent circuit, which is shown to be representative of a standard sample holder. Equations are also derived to permit calculation of dielectric constant and loss tangent using only the Q-meter Q readings and sample-holder plate separations without subsequent low-frequency capacitance determinations, which had normally been employed with the modified Hartshorn-Ward method.
