NEW METHOD OF SELECTING REFRACTORIES FOR GLASS,

Abstract

An electrochemical method is presented which can be used for the selection of refractories for different fusions. Practically, the maximum inertness to a definite fusion is shown by those refractories which, on contact at high temperature, take positive polarity with a minimum of emf, measurable in the chain, Pt-refractory-glass-Pt. The best refractories existing at present under the indicated conditions of testing give a value of emf with the limits of +0.4 to +0.7 v, and less stable ones up to --1.0 v (and over). These values of emf are relative.
