RESEARCH ON THE ENTHALPY OF NITROGEN-OXYGEN-ARGON MIXTURES.

Abstract

The enthalpy of mixtures of nitrogen, oxygen, and argon was measured and correlated over a wide range of compositions, pressures and cryogenic temperatures. A flow-type calorimeter was used to measure the enthalpy of 41 N2-O2-Ar mixtures in the composition ranges of 0-100% nitrogen, 0-100% oxygen, 0-5.0% argon, and pure argon in the temperature range from 125R to 400R and from 0.1 atm. to 25 atm. Twenty-six hundred data points were taken with the flow calorimeter. A static calorimeter was employed for measurement of the solid, melting, and liquid properties from 100R to 125R for those mixtures which form a solid at 100R. These experimental data, coupled with literature information, provided the basis for an internally consistent enthalpy correlation for the forty one mixtures from 100R to 560R and from 0.1 to 25 atmospheres. The correlated properties are presented in extensive tables. Pressure-enthalpy diagrams are included for nitrogen, oxygen, argon, and air. A nomograph for converting from mole fraction to weight fraction for N2-O2-Ar mixtures is presented. (Author)
