THE LINEAR SOLIDIFICATION OF BINARY SOLUTIONS.

Abstract

The linear solidification of a dilute, binary solution is studied in this work. The results of Neumann and Schwarz on linear solidification of a pure substance are extended to solidification of binary solution. The redistribution of solute which occurs during solidification is given appropriate consideration in the treatment. The existence and extent of a region in the liquid phase wherein solidification is thermodynamically possible (supercooled boundary layer) are examined rigorously in some detail. Solidification of a binary solution from a circular cylindrical boundary and from a spherical boundary is also considered. In each case, the problem is reformulated as a set of integral and integrodifferential equations, and an elementary numerical procedure is outlined for treatment of the transformed problem. (Author)
