MODIFIED STETHOSCOPE FOR USE IN AREAS OF HIGH NOISE LEVELS,

Abstract

Copies of a stethoscope which had been modified by medical personnel on an aircraft carrier for use in noisy places, have been evaluated in the fleet and tested in the laboratory. Flight surgeons judged the modification superior to the Navy combination stethoscope and to several other standard types in 15 out of 55 direct comparisons, but the disadvantages of the modified instrument outweighed its advantages. The need for a better noise-excluding stethoscope has been confirmed in this study. Intrinsic deficiencies have been found in the standard devices which were not particularly designed for use in noise. Further work is deemed necessary to develop a more effective and more acceptable stethoscope. (Author)
