COST-EFFECTIVENESS: SOME TRENDS IN ANALYSIS,
Abstract
Cost-effectiveness analysis is not a static craft; while it still may be more an art than a science, its practitioners are constantly striving to widen its area of application and to improve it by introducing better methods of analysis. New approaches and techniques are being proposed constantly. Most of these are primarily mathematical in nature, but a few are directed toward a better treatment of those aspects of its problems that cannot be handled by purely quantitative methods. Emphasis in this paper will be on the latter. The author does not attempt to be comprehensive but merely notes three trends involving, respectively: computers, mathematics, 9and the direct use of expertise. The author discusses the first two only briefly, but describes the last in some detail.
