THE PASSION FOR SKYDIVING,
Abstract
The report is composed of six papers on the emotional aspects of sport parachuting and its meaning for the self-evaluation of the individual. Some mechanisms skydivers employ to manage the fearful component of the skydiving emotion, and mechanisms enabling them to act despite it, are discussed. The first paper examines some emotional qualities which skydivers associate with free fall. The second paper attempts to assess the impact of the act of parachuting on the skydiver's evaluation of himself. The third paper examines some of the conditions under which an individual will recognize or fail to recognize his fear. The fourth paper studies fear of failure as one significant source of fear. The fifth paper deals with some rational and nonrational mechanisms for managing behavior, and the last paper describes some differences between skydivers who adopt an attitude of fatalism or of effectivism toward the outcome of skydiving.
