SOME PRELIMINARY OBSERVATIONS ON A HOSPITAL RESPONSE TO THE JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI TORNADO OF MARCH 3, 1966.

Abstract

On March 3, 1966 a tornado struck Jackson, Mississippi, killing about 20 persons in the metropolitan area and injuring about 300 others. A team from the Ohio State University Disaster Research Center made an organizational study of the hospital most involved. The focus of the research was on the hospital facilities and disaster plans, the sequence of events in the emergency period, and intra- and inter-group problems of control, communication and coordination. Both organizational and medical responses were affected by difficulties in these last three areas, although the hospital overall functioned relatively well in the emergency. A series of informal organizational adjustments minimized difficulties that otherwise might have developed. (Author)
