ANALYSIS OF FEDERAL PUBLIC WORKS PROGRAMS,

Abstract

The Applied Mathematics Laboratory of the David Taylor Model Basin, as a special assignment for the White House Staff, analyzed in record time, during the summer of 1957, the entire Federal Public Works program. This was accomplished by the use of the UNIVAC, a large-scale electronic calculator, and by modern automatic data-processing techniques. Twenty-nine management reports in all were prepared, analyzing in a variety of ways the many thousands of Federal construction projects under way as well as those authorized and planned for the future, and which involve expenditures of billions of dollars. The projects were presented and summarized by location, responsible agencies, type of work, cost range, duration, degree of planning, and other factors. The report contains a complete and detailed account of the problem and the manner in which it was solved by the Applied Mathematics Laboratory. (Author)
