STRESSES IN A PHOTOELASTIC MODEL OF THE ORIGINAL DESIGN OF A BOTTOM LONGITUDINAL CONNECTION IN T-2 TANKERS.

Abstract

A photoelastic model of the original bottom longitudinal connection in T-2 tankers was tested to determine the reliability of photoelastic techniques in evaluating complex structural designs. The highest stress concentration in the model occurred at the location of failure in a steel model of the same design. Also stress concentrations in this design, which failed in service, were higher than those in a photoelastic model of the modified connection. (Author)
