BUCKLING AND ULTIMATE STRENGTHS OF PLATING LOADED IN EDGE COMPRESSION.

Abstract

The buckling and ultimate strengths of welded and nonwelded 6061-T6 aluminum plates were determined. Each plate was simply supported and loaded in edge compression. Ultimate strengths of nonwelded plates were 2 to 15 percent less, depending upon the b/t ratio, than those obtained by the present Bureau of Ships design procedure. Ultimate strengths of welded plates were 0 to 30 percent less, depending upon the location of the weld. (Author)
