RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE STEP-WISE STABILITY CONSTANTS OF COORDINATION COMPOUNDS AND THE NUMBER OF LIGANDS (ORGANIC LIGANDS),

Abstract

For a polydentate complex (chelate) a steric arrangement of the coordinating group in space produces a strong effect on log kn and n. The compound with a higher charged central ion (e.g. Ti(+4)) shows linear change but the compound with a lower charge central ion (e.g. Co(+2) and Ni(+2)) shows a nonlinear relationship between log kn and n. The result still could not be explained because lambda could not be calculated from the dipole moment of a coordinating group or the electrical charge of coordinating atoms in complex ions. However, the nonlinear relationship for the chelates could be shown by the semiempirical equation log k2 = log k1 -2(lambda((n sq)-1). (Author)
