INTERRELATION OF PHYTOPLANKTON AND SAPROPHYTE BACTERIA IN A RESERVOIR,
Abstract
The relation of phytoplankton to bacteria is investigated. With the development of phytoplankton the development of bacteria is retarded. It is assumed that plankton acts toxically on bacteria. The question is raised as to whether algae give off antibiotic substances, toxic to saprophytic bacteria. The data show that in living plankton bacteria do not develop well. Phytoplankton and zooplankton are differentiated. With a decrease in plankton and in water filtered by a membrane, bacteria do grow well. The summer season has much to do with this. The different types of food necessary for bacteria and algae are cited. Data about bacteria in reservoirs without plankton and algae are also given. (Author)
