COMMERCIAL INERTIAL NAVIGATION SYSTEM PREDICTED ACCURACY OF THE BANC-461/LN-12 INERTIAL NAVIGATION SYSTEM WHEN INSTALLED IN A DC-8 AIRCRAFT.

Abstract

The report presents the results of an error analysis study (using a mathematical model) of the BANC 461/LN-12 Inertial Navigation System installed in a DC-8 aircraft. This study was undertaken to describe the theoretical performance of the first automatic autopilot coupled inertial navigation system installed in a commercial jet aircraft engaged in regular passenger service. Specifications for subsystem error were furnished by the manufacturers; Bendix Corporation and Litton Systems, Inc. The DC-8 airframe/autopilot response was approximated by the turn coordination dynamics. Tracking performance was predicted using the mathematical model and numerical analysis techniques. Curves of cross-track and along track predicted errors are given for a typical Atlantic crossing leg.
