MOSSBAUER EFFECT STUDIES OF SURFACE REACTIONS.

Abstract

A constant-acceleration type Mossbauer spectrometer was constructed and employed in studies concerning the chemical reactivity of surface atoms. Particular attention was given to Mossbauer effect studies of the hydrogen-reduction of supported iron catalysts. Initial results indicate the probable state of the reduced iron is a mixed ferrous-ferric oxide in the form of very small particles on the surface of the silica gel support.
