THE PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTION OF THE DISTANCES BETWEEN ATOMS IN A LATTICE,

Abstract

The thermal vibrations in a lattice cause fluctuations of the interatomic distances. The probability distribution of those distance changes is derived by using the distribution function of the displacements from the equilibrium positions of the atoms. Numerical results are given for copper in the low temperature range where the crystal can be approximated by an elastic continuum. (Author)
