ON CANONICAL BASES FOR SUBGROUPS OF AN ABELIAN GROUP.

Abstract

A basis omega sub 1,...omega sub n of an Abelian group G is called canonical for the subgroup H if H = (d sub 1 omega sub 1, ...d sub n omega sub n). Necessary and sufficient conditions are given that a basis exists which is canonical for a set H sub 1, ..., H sub s of subgroups of G. The result is applied to matrices, to n dimensional lattices and to algebraic numberfields. (Author)
