THERMAL CALIBRATORS IN MILLIMETER-WAVE RADIOMETRY,

Abstract

Semitransparent materials, such as transite and marinite-65, are examined for their suitability as thermal calibrators in millimeter-wave radiometry. A differential equation is derived for the effective black-body temperature of a semitransparent material having an arbitrary cross-sectional temperature distribution. The equation essentially corrects for the temperature contributions of the layers beneath the surface. It is shown that at 70 GHz an error as large as 20 percent can be incurred in the calibration of a radiometer when these contributions are neglected. (Author)
