A THEORETICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF THE FREE PISTON CYCLE.

Abstract

The report deals with a continuing extension of the free piston gas compressor system as applied to a Longshot type of hypersonic wind tunnel reservoir system. A characteristics calculation in Fortran IV for the IBM 7094 computer was completed for a simple free piston compression with ideal gases, and a parametric study executed. A computer program treating the flow and variation of gas properties between the free piston tube and a reservoir in a Longshot type of check valve system was also developed. Experimentally, the feasibility of operation of a free piston-Longshot system was demonstrated at pressures approaching 200,000 psi and temperatures estimated at 2000-2500K; this represents, so far as is known, the first time such conditions, generated by simple gasdynamic means, have been contained.
