OPTIMAL CONTROL AND THE USE OF THE PONTRYAGIN MAXIMUM PRINCIPLE.

Abstract

The first part of the thesis reviews the optimal control problem as expressed in terms of state space terminology and briefly discussed the use of the calculus of variations and dynamic programming in solving the optimal control problem. The remainder of the thesis is a detailed discussion of the Pontryagin Maximum Principle which appears to have a wider application to optimal control problems than either the calculus of variations or dynamic programming.
