THE PRESS AND JOURNALS IN COMMUNIST CHINA.
Abstract
A general discussion is presented of the development of newspaper and journal enterprises in Communist China. The author begins by reviewing the political role that the Chinese press played in the Republican revolution of 1911. Then the author traces the history of the Chinese Communist press in its two decades of insurgency. The post-1949 restructuring of the Chinese press was modeled partly after the Soviet pattern and partly after its own pattern developed in Yenan. Then the author discusses in detail the operation of New China News Agency and describes major newspapers like the People's Daily, Southern Daily, Peking Daily, Kuang-ming Daily, etc. A chapter is devoted to the discussion of news reporting in China in terms of the Communist ideological indoctrination. There is also a brief description of some major journals in China. The author notes that the main problem that the regime faces in this field is still low literacy rates among the public at large and political apathy among the few sophisticated literates. (Author)
