THE USE OF FREE TIME BY YOUNG PEOPLE IN SOVIET SOCIETY,

Abstract

The paper begins with the Soviet conception of free time and its function in a socialistic society. Based upon several Russian time-budget studies, the amount of time (free) actually available to young people in the USSR is discussed. This leads into a study of the various activities for free time. First discussed are highly desirable activities for free time within the Soviet Union: study, self-improvement, civic activity, amateur activity, sports, and rationalization; the fully permissable activities for free: time with children, inactive rest, walking, time with friends, and entertainment; in contrast to these activities, the restrictively permissable activities: travel, restaurants and cafes, and card-playing are discussed. The Soviet Unions lack of facilities, personnel, administrative bottlenecks, add commercialization of cultural facilities are shown.
