A GENERAL STUDY OF THE CHANNELS OF COMMUNICATION BETWEEN COMMUNIST CHINA AND THE WESTERN WORLD
Abstract
The paper is a general but comprehensive survey of all major media about foreign countries existing in Communist China. The paper first describes the regular mass media (press, periodicals, and radios) and analyzes their content with emphasis on foreign news. Then a special case study is done-the Cuban Missile Crisis-to see how major Chinese newspapers handled the event. Aside from these, the report also describes the special agencies in China dealing with foreign trade and cultural exchanges. The report presents statistical information about Chinese delegations sent abroad and foreign delegations coming to China from 1959 to 1961, number of foreign exhibits in China from 1958 to 1962, and the number of foreign films shown in China. The paper concludes that people in Communist China have a variety of sources of information about the outside world despite official control of information.
