OPTICAL PUMPING IN ALKALI VAPORS.

Abstract

An investigation was made to study several magnetic characteristics of rubidium vapor in a weak magnetic field using optical pumping techniques under controlled conditions. Relaxation of the pumped system was found to be 30 ms for a buffer gas pressure of 70 torr and remained constant for several different cell temperatures investigated. Using electronic methods to produce modulation of two resonance radiation sources permits the measurement of relaxation to be made by observing a single decay profile of the atomic system. The arrangement of the double beam system leads to a differential technique which would extend the range of relaxation measurements. (Author)
