THE SPARSA ATMOSPHERIC ELECTRICITY DETECTION SYSTEM AS MODIFIED BY THE ADDITION OF THE IMAGE STORAGE TUBE ELECTRO-OPTICAL TRIANGULATION COMPUTER, PART I.

Abstract

The report discusses the ability of the Sferics Position Azimuth Range Spectrum Analyzer (SPARSA) as modified by the addition of the Image Storage Tube Electro-Optical Triangulation Computer to detect and track thunderstorms, and the practicability of using the new display to perform a real-time data analysis. The data were collected over a period of 14 days and include a total of 41 thunderstorms. The tests indicate that the SPARSA equipment, when manned and functioning properly, successfully identified all known areas of electrical activity within a 50-mile radius of the Cape Kennedy Control Center, as verified by thunderstorm observations in and around the pinpointed areas. Since this test did not start until late in the thunderstorm season, and the data collected were limited to two station fixes, this test has been classified as preliminary. (Author)
