RESEARCH ON POWER GENERATION ELECTROGASDYNAMIC ENERGY CONVERSION.

Abstract

A closed cycle electrogasdynamic power generator was developed. A voltage of one million volts at a current of 46 microamperes was indicated. The working fluid was a charged air-water aerosol. The pressure in the energy conversion channel was 47 atmospheres and the Mach no. 0.4. In these studies, it was found that generator voltage, current and power increased with pressure and decreased with channel length. Breakdown current values under high pressure flow conditions were below those found statically and below those found in the supersonic open cycle generator. In a separate open cycle electrogasdynamic generator, at Mach 2, the output was related to the condensation phenomena in the nozzle. Load characteristics and radial and axial potential profiles were measured and these agreed qualitatively with the two-dimensional theory developed in this program. This theory also showed that fully developed charge distributions predicted by early investigations are not obtained in conversion channels of practical dimensions. The program included studies of charged particle mobility measuring techniques and laser beam diagnostics of the aerosol charged carriers. (Author)
