LANGUAGE FACILITIES FOR A MAN, A MACHINE, AND RELATIONAL DATA,
Abstract
The report concerns the design of a man-machine information system in which the storage and manipulation of 'relational sentences' is a major activity. The language for man-to-machine communication is discussed and a number of features are recommended for implementation, including maintenance of separate, identified sets of statements; strong definition facilities; specific error-correction features; explicit use of true, false, and unknown sentence values; and embedding in a conventional algorithmic program package. The introduction includes a discussion of the basis of language design and some factors which make synthetic languages subjectively unsatisfying. (Author)
