INCREASE OF SHIP RESISTANCE IN WAVES.

Abstract

Previous work on ship resistance in waves is summarized. This includes the tests in uniform waves with the derivation of the resistance response function for Series 60: C sub B = 0.60, 0.70 and 0.80, and DE 1006: C sub B = 0.49; and the tests in waves of two components. In the second part of the report the resistance response function is used to predict the resistance of a Series 60, C sub B = 0.70 model in irregular waves of known spectral content. The predictions are compared with measurements. The results indicate that the predicted added resistance is approximately 65 to 80 per cent of the measured values, depending upon the severity of the waves and the speed of the ship. This is a similar trend as found for the experiments in waves of two components. (Author)
