RESEARCHES ON BOTTOM ORGANISMS, ECOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL BIOLOGY OF ADRIATIC COAST.

Abstract

Within the study of the faunistic communities of the Adriatic littoral of Puglie and of their ecology, particular attention was given to the coralligene formations and to the distribution of Clionids. This was done by means of dredging and direct under-water observation. The coralligene of Puglie's littoral is an extensive organogenous formation of particular interest since it is the only one known until now developing from a depth of only 9-10 m. The general characteristics of this formation and the distribution of Porifera and other groups were studied. Quantitative data were drawn with regard to the relative importance of animal and vegetal population living on the surface of the formation. The Clionids of Puglie's littoral are particularly abundant in both number of species and of number of individuals; their function in the erosion of the littoral rock is relevant. Besides the general distribution of some species, their microenvironmental distribution was studied in relation to various conditions of the littoral rock. Per cent data were obtained on frequency and dominance. (Author)
