EXPERIMENTS WITH ELASTIC COMPLETE SPHERICAL SHELLS OF HIGH RADIUS-TO-THICKNESS RATIO,

Abstract

Tests performed on elastic complete spherical shells of high radius-to-thickness ratio show that buckling under uniform external pressure begins with a small rotationally symmetric dimple. A series of nonsymmetric mode shapes follow, which then dominate both the dynamic and the statically stable post-buckling behavior. (Author)
