MECHANISM AND DYNAMICS OF COAXIAL PLASMA ACCELERATION.
Abstract
The primary objective of our research is the exploration of the character of the current sheet which separates a plasma from a magnetic field. We have shown that plasma vortices of two different types are produced in pairs at this interface. One type of vortex has its filamentary axis parallel to the background magnetic field and the other type has its filamentary axis perpendicular to the background magnetic field. Both types have now been observed and studied in the plasma coaxial accelerator. The parallel to the background magnetic field vortices have been observed and studied in plasma flow over a magnetic dipole and in the firing of a small two-wire button gun across a magnetic field. Without a doubt both of these types of vortices are the components out of which plasma turbulence is made. (Author)
