ORIENTATION AND REACTIVITY IN FREE RADICAL AROMATIC SUBSTITUTION.

Abstract

A summary is given of work involving the study of orientation and reactivity in free radical aromatic substitution, with particular emphasis on polar factors. The principle approach was to study the attack by substituted phenyl radicals (chiefly from peroxide decomposition) on aromatic compounds. In addition, investigations were undertaken to (1) redetermine orientation and reactivity in simple phenylation; (2) test the validity of previously determined rate factors for the reaction Ar- + Ar'H yields ArAr'H-; and (3) study ester formation in peroxide ((ArCOO)2) decompositions.
