BERYLLIUM-FILTERED NEUTRON BEAM QUALITY FROM THE AMRR AS EFFECTED BY CORE ELEMENT ARRANGEMENTS.
Abstract
Neutron spectra in the region of 4 to 8 Angstroms were obtained for various fuel and BeO reflector arrangements in the Army Materials Research Reactor. Intensity and signal-to-noise ratio changes in the range of 15% to 20% were obtained at a single axis crystal spectrometer through rearrangement of core elements immediately adjacent to the beam tube termination. In general, the results indicate that the experiment external to the reactor should view reflector element material only, at the core face, and this reflector material should be surrounded by fuel for the best intensity and signal-to-noise combination. Spectral shift changes were found to be less than 4%. Some data on the removal of water from beam tube gaps are included in an appendix. (Author)
