BASIC RESEARCH IN SUPPORT OF MILITARY MEDICINE; ENTOMOLOGY: IDENTIFICATION OF THE HOST RANGE OF CULEX TRITAENIORHYNCHUS MOSQUITOES IN THE RYUKYU ISLANDS.

Abstract

Blood meals from 20,522 Culex tritaeniorhynchus mosquitoes collected in light traps on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, were identified as to source by the precipitin test. Light traps were located so as to include a wide range of animal hosts. The results showed that Culex tritaeniorhynchus were rather general feeders on larger domestic animals preferring cows and pigs. Over 81% of the mosquitoes tested had fed on these two animals. A few mosquitoes fed on horses, goats, dogs and chickens. The very small incidence of mosquitoes feeding on man (0.02%) was considered highly significant. (Author)
