SUPERSONIC TRANSPORT FINANCIAL PLANNING STUDY.

Abstract

The basic purpose of this study was to consider and evaluate the implications of the various means by which the SST program might be financed from completion of the prototype development and flight testing phase (i.e., Phase III) through the certification and production phases (i.e., Phases IV and V). The quantitative data used herein were developed and furnished by the Office of Supersonic Transport Development of the Federal Aviation Agency in a manner consistent with other studies which were being conducted concurrently with this one. Based on these data, a series of cash flow analyses was made under a variety of assumed conditions, in order to postulate the financial feasibility of the program at key points. These analyses focused primarily on the SST manufacturers' and airlines' financing requirements implicit in a 500 SST airplane program, considered by the FAA as the most likely outcome. The indicated results are, of course, heavily dependent upon the base data and the assumptions employed. It should be emphasized that the findings of the report should be used qualifiedly, i.e., to indicate the range of the financing requirements under various assumptions, the conditions under which the participants might obtain and/or provide financial support, and the broad circumstances under which various financing arrangements might be used.
