ROLLING QUALITIES OF THE PROPOSED 1935 BATTLESHIP HULL,

Abstract

The results of the report show that the proposed hull has exceptionally good anti-rolling qualities. With GMs of 2.0 and 2.5 inches and with mean periods of 3.06 and 2.81 seconds respectively the damping in rolling of 3302 is equal to that of 1817 at 3.5 degrees and that it rapidly becomes greater as the amplitude of roll increases. For angles less than three degrees, model 1817 has the greater damping by an appreciable but not great amount. The 2.0 and 2.5 inch GMs, corresponding to ship values of 60 and 75 inches, cover the range of battleship GMs fairly well, the latter ranging from 60 to 80 inches. The value of GM for the proposed design will probably fall somewhere within this range and therefore the above mentioned results on damping may be accepted as covering probable ship conditions.
