THE TAHITI-TIKEHAU EXPEDITION,
Abstract
OBJECTIVES OF THE EXPEDITION: To study the behavior of sharks in their natural environment, especially with reference to feeding patterns; To measure the biting force exerted by the jaws of representative species of sharks with a new instrument known as the Snodgrass Gnathodynamometer; To observe the reaction of sharks to various stimuli such as a flashing light, colored objects, chemicals believed to have a repellent effect on sharks, etc.; To collect and preserve for subsequent dissection and microscopic study the heads, eyes, brains, and reproductive tracts of representative species of sharks; To tag and release as many species of sharks in good condition as possible, in cooperation with the AIBS Shark Research Panel International Shark Tagging Program that is headed by Stewart Springer of the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
