A SCATTERED LIGHT PHOTOELASTIC METHOD FOR THE DETERMINATION OF TEMPERED STRESSES IN AIRCRAFT WINDSHIELDS,

Abstract

Numerous attempts have been made in the past to determine nondestructively the stresses in tempered glass plates. A brief review is given of earlier methods, which only determine the surface stress or the stress at the middle plane, and a new scattered light photoelastic technique is described for determining the stress distribution across the thickness of tempered glass plates. The theory of this new method is developed, and experimental apparatus as well as techniques are described. Experiments were made with an aircraft windshield sample having a three-layer (glass-vinyl-glass) sandwich structure. Photographs of fringe patterns in scattered light are shown and the stress distribution across the thickness of the glass layer is determined. (Author)
