POSSIBILITY OF STUDYING THE WESTWARD DRIFT BY ARCHEOMAGNETIC DATA.

Abstract

The comparison of the curve of secular change of inclination for the Caucasus, encompassing a time interval of about 3000 years, with the curve of change in I for other regions (France, Italy, England, Japan) has made it possible to notice several general regularities which appear especially clearly in the curves relating to a relatively narrow interval of latitudes. In order to support the reality of the noted regularities, supplementary collections of samples were taken from the same latitude belt. The newly taken samples were measured, as in the case of the Caucasian samples, by the method of progressive heatings. The results of measuring the inclinations of samples from Bulgaria lie as a first approximation on the curve for the Caucasus, shifted in phase about 100 years toward our time. This coincidence has a somewhat conventional character, since 100 years is a time interval lying at the limits of error for dating samples of the first millenium of our era. The collection was not large, and hence it did not appear possible to construct an independent curve for Bulgaria. These results, as well as the data of Eotvos for Hungary and the new results of Ye. N. Tarkhov for Leningrad, in comparison with our results and those from abroad, gave the possibility of tracing the time change of inclination for various regions of the earth's surface. (Author)
