BRAIN STEM STIMULATION AND ETHOLOGICAL STUDIES ON BIRDS.

Abstract

Methods for raising tame experimental gulls, for long lasting anaesthesia in birds and for implantation of brain electrodes in small animals were developed. 270 brain loci were stimulated and the resulting ouvert behaviour recorded. Extensive data on a dearousal system, on agonistic and body orientation behaviour was obtained and is being related to current behavioural theory. Observational studies of gull behaviour were continued, particularly on sexual and grooming behaviour. Ecological information accrued as a sideline. The application of random signal analysis to behaviour was initiated. The colour responsiveness of gulls is being examined both behaviourally and physiologically. (Author)
