STUDIES ON THE APPLICATION OF A SKIN TEST FOR FILARIASIS IN THE ASSESSMENT OF THE STATUS OF TRANSMISSION.

Abstract

The degree of transmission of filariid worms in a filariasis endemic area was studied. A skin test utilizing a purified fraction from the dog filaria, Dirofilaria immitis, was used as an antigen. Results of two skin tests carried out at a three-month interval on the same persons indicated those who had acquired a sensitization during the specified interval of time. In order to check the reproducibility of the test 215 persons of 15 to 16 years old in the Koniya Highschool were simultaneously skin tested two times. A statistical analysis revealed that the diameter indicates a significant change in the status of sensitization. More than 800 school children of 10 to 14 years of age in Koniya area were examined by the skin test once in September 1966 and again in December 1966 at a 3 month interval. It was observed that 170 or 20.53% of 828 children showed a significantly increased reactivity at the second test. A theoretical value of 18.29% was worked out from the observed figure. This suggested that in Koniya area around 18% of inhabitants were transmitted and sensitized by filarial worms during the period from September 66 to December 66. This may be considered to correspond to the degree of transmission of filarial worms in the area and to be an index of the degree of the endemicity. (Author)
