MECHANISMS OF ENERGY TRANSFER IN DIELECTRICS.

Abstract

Experimental and theoretical studies of the influence of X-rays on the electric behavior of dielectric materials have been undertaken. Their ultimate goal is to determine the number of free charges produced by a given amount of energy absorbed in various dielectric materials, the external field strength necessary to collect all the charges made available by X-rays, and the number of trapping sites for positive and negative charges produced by X-rays. Experiments with anthracene and polystyrene are described. A subnanosecond coincidence apparatus for the investigation of positron annihilation spectra in materials has been assembled, tested and calibrated. Target chambers of various designs for studying the influence of high electric fields on these spectra are being constructed and tested. Our computer program for data analysis has been rewritten for the CDC 6600 computer of New York University Computer Center. The theory for the electric field effect is being formulated. Complementary work on the study of defects in insulators by positron annihilations is described. (Author)
