BASES AND FOUNDATIONS.

Abstract

The authors review the design, construction and maintenance of foundations in permafrost regions and engineering aspects of the perennially frozen foundation soils. The various methods of constructing foundations in permafrost are: designing for preservation of the permafrost, designing for gradual thawing of the permafrost with possible differential settlement of the foundation soils, designing for preconstruction thawing of the permafrost. Measures to counteract the effects of heaving in the seasonally thawed layer above the permafrost are also discussed.
