GENERAL CONCEPT FOR AN ELECTRIC MOTOR REPAIR PROGRAM FOR THE FLEET.

Abstract

A comprehensive program covering all aspects of the maintenance and repair of electric motors in the Fleet and at repair facilities, is urgently needed. Such a program is necessary for the development in the Fleet of the service life and reliability inherent in electric motors. Some of the shipboard motors, particularly some of the larger low-noise motors in submarine service, have experienced repeated failures and are a significant reliability problem. A program which includes design review, installation and maintenance guides, improved repair facilities, training for repair personnel, instructions and drawings, and guides for failure analysis can reduce the costs in time, funds, and lack of reliability associated with repeated unsatisfactory motor repairs.
