THE 5E-5 RUBIDIUM-85 VAPOR MAGNETOMETER.
Abstract
Satellite 1964 83C was launched on December 13, 1964, into a nearly circular polar orbit, with inclination 89.993 degrees, period 106.3 minutes, perigee 1019 km, and apogee 1094 km. The satellite contains a Rubidium-85 vapor magnetometer, which successfully mapped, at middle and low latitudes, the geomagnetic field in the region traversed while the satellite was within telemetry range of a network of ground stations. These data are being analyzed in studies relating to the analytic description of the geomagnetic field and to the magnetic effects of quiet-time currents in the lower ionosphere and of magnetic storm-time currents in the Van Allen zones of trapped radiation. The present report discusses the elements relevant to the magnetometer assembly, pre-flight tests, in-flight calibrations, and some of the geomagnetic data obtained. (Author)
