FLUOROCARBON NITRIDE ELASTOMERS.

Abstract

The search for an improved heterofluorocarbon elastomer is described. The synthesis of a number of new fluorimine monomers led to the useful monomer - perfluoroisopropylidenimine, (CF3)2C=NF. It was successfully copolymerized with tetrafluoroethylene by gamma- irradiation to yield a copolymer which melts to a free-flowing liquid at 270-280C. Preliminary characterization of this copolymer is described. The new compounds, perfluoro-1,4diazabutadiene-1,3, 3, perfluoro-1, 4-diazabutene-1, and N-fluoro-N'-sec-perfluoropropyldiazine-N'-oxide, are reported. The diene shows no useful monomer reactivity. Attempts to prepare N-fluoro and N-trifluoromethyl perfluoroaziridine monomers are reported. (Author)
