MANAGEMENT SCIENCE FRONTIERS: 1970-1980,
Abstract
The following conclusions were made regarding management science in the future. Advances in mathematical programming, decision theory, simulation, etc., will continue, and they will exploit the growing hardware and software capability of computers. New areas will be opened up to management science, especially those dealing with social and public issues and programs. These challenges will add to the breadth of training required of management scientists. Social welfare functions, social costs, and the so-called externalities of private activity will have to be increasingly considered in building new models, in data collection, and in analysis. Also, opportunities will emerge for bringing the decision-maker more directly into the analysis of problems because of computer advances, better measurement techniques for dealing with utility, and greater understanding of the decision-making process. As a result, more management scientists will enter into laboratory and field-testing situations where systematic analysis of the decision-maker is feasible. This will call for greater development and application of psychological and sociological techniques in our management science studies of decision-making and control. (Author)
