LOW ENERGY ELECTRONS ON A FIELD LINE WITH A POTENTIAL MINIMUM,
Abstract
Although the component of electric field parallel to the earth's magnetic field lines is weak, it is important in considering the motion of low energy charged particles in the tail of the magnetosphere. This electric field is due to a process similar to the thermoelectric effect. At connection of the interplanetary and earth field lines on the dayside there is a minimum of electric potential. Model distribution functions are used to compute the electron density at several points on the line of force as a function of the local potential. The results can be used to determine the potential, when the electron density is known. (Author)
