THE WATER ABSORPTION OF AN UNSATURATED POLYESTER RESIN AND GLASS-FIBRE/RESIN COMPOSITES.

Abstract

Water absorption measurements were made on a cast unsaturated polyester resin and glass-fibre/resin composites at various temperatures. The results were analysed by diffusion and capillary flow equations. Water appeared to enter the resin by a diffusion process. The diffusion coefficients at different temperatures were calculated and an activation energy for the process determined. In glass-fibre composites it appeared that both diffusion and capillary processes were in operation, but that the effect of the diffusion process was reduced by the presence of fibres. (Author)
