PRESERVATION OF RED CELLS IN THE FROZEN STATE WITH SUGARS AND MACROMOLECULAR ADDITIVES: MECHANISM OF INJURY OF FREEZING.

Abstract

The storage of ACD blood can be extended to eight weeks if the blood is incubated with adenine-inosine at the end of the storage period, when measure of viability is based on the accepted standard of an average survival of 70% or better of radioactivity of Cr51 tagged erythrocytes 24 hours posttransfusion. Evidence is presented suggesting that the absolute increase in ATP following incubation with adenine-inosine may not per se be solely responsible for the increased viability of erthrocytes. (Author)
